The side menu gives you access to all other areas of the dashboard where you can customize the design of your store, manage products, see orders, customers, and so on.

Adding new products is also an easy process. The interface represents the most important product parameters in the center panel, and makes everything else accessible via the tabs at the top.

Generally, this interface gives you lots of features while remaining easy to use, which is great.

Here are some other features you can find in Ecwid:

  • From 10 to unlimited products
  • Unlimited orders, file storage and bandwidth
  • 24/7 live chat support + phone + priority support (no free plan support)
  • Selling to multiple websites, blogs and social networks
  • Sales on any device and on the go
  • User Address Book
  • Smart shipping calculator
  • It integrates with WordPress, Joomla and more
  • Keep track of inventory
  • Sales of digital goods
  • Accept payments through 40 different payment options
  • Define delivery options
  • Level 1 PCI compatible

Overall, Ecwid offers all the features that most ecommerce store owners might need. Plus, it’s very affordable, especially if you’re OK with having less than 100 products in your catalog.

Last but not least, no doubt, Ecwid offers the best free plan of the platforms featured in this comparison. The only other tool with a free plan is Big Cartel, but this one is pretty limited compared to Ecwid’s.

Templates and Designs 🎨

Let’s be honest: design is important, everyone knows that if the design doesn’t appeal to the visitor, then there is a chance that they will look for a purchase elsewhere. At the end of the day, if your store looks awful, even if your products are amazing, people will not pay attention to them.

Shopify

If you are looking for platform which offers some of the most professional topics, then you really should look for Shopify, the truth is that there is no platform that offers better themes than Shopify.

There are over 100 themes (both free and paid) available, all of which are fairly modern in appearance. Plus, you can customize and fine-tune the theme you choose until it looks exactly how you want it.

shopify themes

Shopify themes have also proven to be very useful by store owners in real-world scenarios. Just look at this gallery of existing store designs, all created with Shopify themes:

BigCommerce

BigCommerce has a nice theme library for you, divided into several categories, all of which are customizable and fully customizable. They are designed to create a more modern, fluid user experience, using new cool store features for categorization and catalogs of different sizes. Both free and paid options are available and I must say that they are free.

Volusion

Volusion has about 40+ themes for you to choose from over 10 free themes.

topics of volusions

While they all look good, there may not be that much variety compared to them Shopify or BigCommerce, Also, the size of the catalog itself is a factor, which may mean that you may find it difficult to choose a theme that truly suits your needs.

On the other hand, everyone is sensitive. However, when it comes to customizations, all you can do is adjust the font and colors. Or you may encounter raw HTML and CSS editing, which is also an option.

The Big Cartel

Big Cartel only offers a total of 15 topics (at the time of writing). This is a major drawback because unique branding is a huge part of online sales. However, you can search Big Cartel topics through Google to find nice solutions from dear sellers.

It works like WordPress where you buy themes separately from the platform. It’s not the easiest way to search for topics, but it gives you more options.

big cartel topics

Big Cartel also lacks an “edit and drop” editor, but customization is not the worst thing in the world. All your design elements are located on the left, which is fine, but the tools are a little weak and all that is required is a knowledge of coding.

3dcart

While 3dcart offers many modern themes (100+), they are not exactly what you would call creative. That being said, they all work wonderfully for big stores. I like to consider these types of topics like the one you would see from Best Buy.

3dcart themes

3dcart offers beautiful product galleries and they come right to the point of sale to customers. In the past, we have talked about how 3dcart the topics seemed outdated, but this is no longer the case. You can find both free and premium themes.

Ecwid

Ecwid has a very surprising approach to store design, no topic choose from. At least I couldn’t find them the easy way.

The way it actually works is that you can get into that one Ecwid App Market and buy some pre-made themes from third-party websites.

ecwid topics

Plus, you can customize the basic details of how your store looks. Things like image sizes, ratios, product card details, category positions, product page layout, navigation, and a few other things.

Generally, this might be a good solution for a certain type of user – someone who wants to go with enough store and not design too much – but for me personally, this does not suit me too much, and is probably not the best ecommerce platform out there.

Although you might think that the number of topics offered by the platform is not such a big deal. You need to remember that if your store lacks originality, such as one that has the same theme as 50 other stores, buyers will quickly attribute this to the poor management of the store owner.

This is much more likely to make them leave your site without even giving you a real shot.

Apps & Extras 🔌

Each platform featured in this comparison offers some apps and add-ons to some extent.

But the two that stand out the most and offer the largest selection of apps and plugins are Shopify and BigCommerce. Both companies offer more than 100 different apps and add-ons that can be easily integrated into your store.

Big Store Apps

The other thing to keep in mind is how easy it is to search for apps and add-ons, since you probably have a few items in mind that you want to add to your store. You may need an automated email solution or application to help you build your loyalty program.

With Shopify and BigCommerce, you can search, filter, and browse categories when you need a specific application. Other ecommerce solutions either make them extremely difficult or you have no functionality at all.

Customer support ♥ ️

You will probably need support at some point eCommerce career, so it’s important to become familiar with different support offers from companies.

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison of the support options offered relative to the monthly plan you need to buy:

  • Shopify: 24/7 live chat + phone support on all plans ($ 9 to $ 299)
  • BigCommerce: 24/7 live chat + phone support on all plans ($ 29.95 to $ 249.95)
  • Volusion: 24/7 live chat support ($ 15), 24/7 live chat + phone ($ 35), 24/7 priority support ($ 75)
  • The Big Cartel: Monday to Friday email, 9am to 6pm EST on all plans ($ 0 to $ 29.99)
  • 3dcart: 24/7 live chat ($ 19), 24/7 live chat + phone ($ 29), 24/7 priority support ($ 229)
  • Ecwid: no support free plan, 24/7 live chat ($ 15), 24/7 live chat + phone ($ 35), 24/7 priority support ($ 99)

Shopify and BigCommerce both offer 24/7 phone support as well as chat and email. Other platforms usually offer live chat support, however, their phone support comes with time constraints.

One company that doesn’t seem to offer phone or chat support would be Big Cartel, which only offers email support, and what’s more, they only offer it Monday – Friday 9am to 6pm EST. Also, no support if you are on a free Ecwid plan.

Lastly, if you are looking for a company that offers great customer support at any time of the day, you should really try Shopify or BigCommerce.

In addition, all the solutions we talk about have their own knowledge bases, which basically allow you to search the topic and see if anyone else has talked about it and dealt with it in the past. In my opinion, this is one of the best support areas you can find because it allows you to fix the problem while you may be sitting on your phone waiting for a support representative.

While all of these knowledge bases have frequently asked questions and other documentation in addition to blogs, Shopify and BigCommerce have the most users, making them far superior in terms of content to the knowledge base. Why is that so? Easy. As more people discuss systems, more questions have been asked by default and more answers have been asked.

Popularity 🍾

If you were looking for a platform to launch your own eCommerce stores, you have no doubt come across at least a few names that we are comparing today. While popularity is not exactly the best motivating factor in making a decision that will affect your future business life, it is definitely worth talking about, since when large groups of people lean toward a particular solution, we like to hope that it is the reason.

Still, if you look at the Google Trends comparison, there is only one clear winner in terms of what people are searching for and how many are interested in popular consumer e-commerce solutions, but let’s wait a second, First, take a look at the popularity chart among our five tools: BigCommerce, Volusion, Big Cartel, 3dcart, Ecwid in the last 12 months:

Now see what happens when we add Shopify to the mix:

Yes, you see that right, Shopify is about 7 times more popular than anything else!

Another way to analyze popularity is to link it to where your customers are going when they leave their business e-commerce platform, The reason why this is interesting is because it shows you an indicator of what kept companies up to date with technologies and made improvements to attract additional customers. A quick search for market share on Shopify shows that Shopify is gaining the majority of its customers from BigCommerce, Big Cartel and Volusion. BigCommerce still steals some customers from Shopify, but it used to be the first place people would go after Shopify. We guess it’s because of BigCommerce pricing.

Reviews of the best e-commerce platforms - losing and winning customers

Final Verdict: Here’s which platform is best 🥇

It doesn’t really matter how many comparison articles you read, there is only one person who knows which platform offers exactly what you need, and that person is you. It all comes down to which platform will allow you to sell the products you offer in the best way to you as the store owner and your customers.

Based on the recommendations above, feel free to click on one or all of the links below to discover what each platform offers you. I highly recommend starting your free trial with at least two solutions so you can play around with them and see what works best for you.

Accordingly, we have our own recommendation when it comes best ecommerce platform available. There are two solutions:

🏁 Our choice:

Shopify

Shopify is the most flexible, feature-rich and most complete e-commerce platform. Outside the box, it already offers everything you will need to run an effective store, and also lets you customize your design and add different feature extensions.

You can also sell almost anything you want, including physical products, digital products and downloads, services and even bundled delivery.

It all starts at $ 29 per month, or as much as $ 9 per month if you are not aware that you do not have an online store but work through social media and other channels. I would have no problem recommending this platform to anyone looking to get started in the e-commerce industry.

Overall Rating: 10/10

💰 budget:

ecwid

Currently, Ecwid is the only reasonable free option on the market. Although, it is not without its drawbacks. Basically, you don’t get any changeable themes / designs for the store – you can customize your stock design just by changing fonts, colors, etc. There is also no support on the free plan, and you can only have up to 10 products.

It might be a good place to start in some online stores. However, once your store gets off the ground and starts making money, you’re probably better off switching to another platform.

Overall Rating: 7/10
