But first …

What is Shopify?

Shopify is a complete all-in-one ecommerce solution. Once you sign up for an account through Shopify, it lets you:

  • Build an online store all by yourself.
  • Choose the design that suits your needs.
  • Choose a unique name and domain for your store.
  • Add your products and their details (price, description, etc.).
  • Process your customers’ orders.
  • Deal with online payments through solutions like PayPal and others.
  • Launch special promotions, discounts and sales.
  • And much more.

At the same time, Shopify is a far more favorable choice than hiring someone to build a store for you. Not to mention it is more reliable than long retention (the software itself is constantly being upgraded and has great customer support available).

To find out more about Shopify’s accessories and stores and to find out if it’s the perfect solution for your specific needs, feel free to visit our review. There, we highlight all the pros and cons of Shopify and discuss the most important features of the platform.

Please enable login

As you can see, you are using a free 14-day trial here, so you need to spend money to test things and see if Shopify really works for you and your e-commerce store.

The next step is important from a legal standpoint. If you want to work like an actual store, you need to provide some details about your business.

Just the usual web form:

After clicking “Next”, Shopify will ask you for some additional business information. Based on what you choose, Shopify will try to improve your experience up front:

How to Set Up Your First Online Store with Shopify

Starting with an overview of Shopify’s main dashboard:

Shopify dashboard

  • (1) Home for your dashboard. Where to find details about your Shopify store.
  • (2) where your first orders will appear and where you are able to manage each incoming order.
  • (3) talk about where you can add and manage your products, supplies, product collections, gift cards.
  • (4) Discuss where you can manage your customers and any information you have about them. These include their pre-orders, their personal information, statistics (e.g. sales volume) and more.
  • (5) rather where you can generate all kinds of trade report.
  • (6) talk about where you can create discount codes and distribute them to people.
  • (7) addresses where you can install new applications and extend Shopify with a new feature. Really cool stuff. For example, you can install an application for SEO, email marketing and so on. Particularly useful for advanced users.
  • (8) All trade related settings can be found here. This includes things like your personal information, payment settings, payment settings, taxes, shipping and more.
  • (9) The main screen of each panel.

You’d rather stop at that last item for a minute. When you first visit Dashboard, Shopify will present you with a list of actions you can take to fully customize and launch your store. You prefer to do it.

In the case of my new store, here is what Shopify tells me to do:

Shopify-time

  • From the first drop-down menu, select “Fashion & Clothing.”
  • Then I go to add my first product. Just click on the “Add Product” button that you can see above. After that, Shopify will take me to the “Add Product” page, where you can complete the process:

I’m calling my first product “French Bulldog’s Hat”.

The nice thing is that adding pictures works by drag-and-drop. So simply take a picture from your desktop and drag it to the section labeled “Drop upload files.” Like this:

At this point, you can set legal parameters such as taxes, shipping options, and also set up your inventory (but you’ve saved everything optional).

Of these four, the most useful option will be “Create an Online Store”.

The other three are about selling products in your actual brick-and-mortar store (Shopify can help with that), selling directly through Facebook, adding freestanding individual products to your site outside Shopify (which means you can add a button for example purchase on your WordPress blog).

Just click on “Add Online Store”.

These are just examples. Once you’ve started the store, you can sell anything you want through any of the topics.)

At this point, just click the “Post Theme” button and your design will be uploaded.

In the next step Shopify will give you an example of how your store looks, along with how it looks on your mobile phone.
