Shopify is simply the easiest way to set up an online store.

Whether you want to make a little more money or make it your full time job, Shopify is the fastest way to get online and get started.

I actually timed it from start to finish and it only took me 19 minutes to create a store, add products and hit the “go live” button.

Substantially … my 19-minute trade was not perfect, and I would have spent much longer switching it over. But it shows how simple the process is.

Supplement on our complete Shopify guide

This post is the first in a four-part series on Shopify that will take you from a beginner to a Shopify-master! Today we start with the basic setup as we go through the 20-minute setup process.

But first…

Why Shopify?

Most shopkeepers do not want to bother with the site from scratch and maintain tricky mechanics. They just want to sell! That’s where Shopify comes in:

Take advantage of it

  1. You don’t need to know a single line of web code – Shopify guides you through the whole process.
  2. Shopify lets you add your own domain name (e.g. www.my-store.com), hosts the store for you, and maintains a complicated ‘back end’.
  3. The design of your store is simple, you can choose from 100 existing themes and customize them to your own needs.
  4. Shopify processes, manages and monitors all your orders and payments, allowing you to focus on the business.

Sounds great, what do I need to get started?

All you need is 20 minutes to save, a product to sell, and $ 29 a month. But there is a 14-day free trial and you no longer have to enter card details until you live. Until then, you are free to play.

Are there any drawbacks to Shopify?

If you are looking for complete control over the back end (web hosting, performance, coding, etc.) Shopify may feel too restrictive for you. It’s a little more expensive than the other options, but you can get unmatched power for the price.

Alternative? Use WordPress with a plugin called WooCommerce. But if you are looking for a simple, easy-to-use option with no hassle, choose Shopify.

Let’s go!

In this short guide, we will go through the basic stages of setting up a Shopify store. We will review registration, design, product addition, domain name addition and payment mechanism setup.

Step 1: Sign in

The first step is simple, go to Shopify.com and enter your email address.

Step 2: Provide your store name

We hope you have the idea in mind. I use “Awesome Snowboards” for my demo store.

Step 3: Add an address so Shopify can calculate sales tax and payments

Step 4: Start customizing your design!

After signing up, you will be greeted with a simple dashboard. Let’s start with the fun stuff: designing a store.

Step 5: Choose the perfect theme for your store

Shopify has over 100 design templates or “themes” to customize your online store. Think of them as a starting point – you can adjust or change the look, colors and images during setup.

For my ‘Awesome Snowboards’ store, I choose the ‘Boundless’ theme. It’s clean, simple and has plenty of room for big pictures.

Step 6: Customize the theme to your liking

Shopify gives you plenty of control over the look and feel of your site. Here, I uploaded a new ‘hero image’ and wrote the simple logo above.

You can spend hours changing the look and design at this point, but you can return to it at any time. Let’s add some products for now.

Step 7: Add your first product

Go back to your dashboard and click “add product”.

Add your first product

Step 8: Enter the name and description of your first product

Tip tip: Do not skip the product description. A good description is necessary if you want to convince buyers to buy your goods. Choose your words carefully and make the product stand out!

A unique product description is also essential for better search engine ranking. I will explain more about search engine optimization for Shopify in the third part of this series.

Step 9: Upload stunning images of your product

Pictures can increase or decrease your sales rate. Great photos are key to convincing your customers to buy from you, so choose them carefully. Check out this guide on how images can increase your conversion rate, then upload your best images.

Use stunning images of your product

Step 10: Determine Price and Stock

Enter the price of your product and make sure to check the box labeled “Tax”. Shopify will automatically add the correct sales tax based on your location.

Enter ‘SKU’ (storage unit) which is simply a number to identify each product. IMPORTANT, change the “stock policy” to ‘Shopify track supplies for this product’ and enter the number of products available to you.

Shopify tracks how many products are sold and how much is left over.

Stocks and prices

Step 11. Enter the weight of the product for delivery

Shopify will try to calculate a rough shipping price based on the location of the customer and the weight of your product. If you do not have a large logistics and fulfillment team delivering your product, select “manual” fulfillment.

Product details

Step 12: Add variants for size, color, etc.

If your product comes with different options, like a T-shirt of different sizes, Shopify will fix it for you. Just say what sizes, colors or fabrics are available for each product.

Product variant

Hit ‘publish’ and your product is automatically added to the front store. Repeat the process for each product you sell.

Step 13: Create a custom domain name – my-store.com!

A custom domain name makes your online store look sleek and professional. Shopify makes this easy, so click “set up custom domain”.

Create a custom domain

Step 14: Buy the selected domain through the Shopify app

If you don’t have a domain name yet, Shopify lets you see what’s available and buy it there and then. If you already have a domain name through another seller (such as GoDaddy), you can easily add it.

15-shop

Step 15: Add your own payment mechanism so you can make money!

In the past, one of the hardest things about setting up an online store was paying. Fortunately, Shopify facilitates this as well. Scroll to Settings> Payments and start by selecting the method you want.

Paypal is the easiest option for many, but you can also choose “Shopify Payment” which allows you to accept credit cards directly (without using PayPal as a middle man). You just need to link your bank account to Shopify. If you have another payment method in mind, you can choose from a dozen or more “alternative payments” including Amazon, BitPay, and CoinBase.

Add a payment gateway to your store

You are done!

Click the ‘publish’ button and your online store is ready to live in the world.

Of course, this is a simple and basic introduction to Shopify. Commissioning your store is just the beginning. Now comes the hard part: getting customers through (virtual) doors and turning them into a reliable business.

As we go through this Shopify series, we will look at these next steps and turn this simple start into a dizzying success!

In the comments below, share how you achieved this. If you have already set up a Shopify store, let me know about your experience with the platform.
