Many people have a cool product they want to sell online, but they just don’t know how to do it. That’s why we decided to write this Shopify Beginner’s Guide, explaining how to create your own online retail store using this great ecommerce tool.

Shopify is one of the largest online retail platforms in the world. Cloud-based software that lets you create an online store with a few clicks. It covers the most important features of an online store such as payment, inventory, product management, store design, legal and more. It’s no different that Shopify is used by more than 600,000 companies worldwide.

Shopify was founded in 2004 as a retail store. At the time, Tobias Lutke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake wanted to sell snowboards online, but were unhappy with existing e-commerce solutions and decided to develop their own software. In 2006, they made it available to the world as an open source program.

There were few e-commerce solutions available at the time. Wix was released in 2006 (read our Wix review), Magento 2008 and WooCommerce 2011. Although Squarespace (read our Squarespace review) was launched and launched in 2003, it did not come with a store builder and focused on hosting services.

In this guide you will learn how to create a simple web store by adding products and customizing their appearance. Then we’ll give you a brief introduction on domain management in Shopify and how to publish your store, so let’s get started. Like any other application, Shopify has its advantages and disadvantages. Its biggest advantage is that installation and configuration are easy, making it easy to start your own online business. You don’t need developers to set up your online store, so you can focus on what you know best, and that does the job.

Shopify specializes in providing online stores in a number of ways, so you virtually purchase expert knowledge as part of the service. This is useful for security, data protection and payment processing. Shopify is secure, and sensitive information such as customer information, shipping address and payment information will be kept.

Another interesting thing is that customers are more willing to buy products from you if your website creates a safe and consistent impression. If your browser card freezes or crashes while placing an order, your customers will hesitate to enter their credit card information.

Being a one-stop shop solution, Shopify App Store has many features that you can easily integrate into your store. On top of that, you can choose from dozens of expert-created themes that will make your online business look great and professional.

You can also integrate accounting. QuickBooks Online (read our review of Online QuickBooks) and Xero (read our Xero review) play nice with Shopify, which we think makes a lot of sense. Instead of manually making 200 sales each day, these programs will automatically import them.

If you want to change the subject thoroughly, simple CSS and HTML are not enough. You need to know Fluency, the Shopify programming language. Even if you want to hire a freelancer, you may encounter problems because it is not a widely used language. This allows developers to charge ridiculous prices.

Shopify also comes with a number of integrated marketing – email marketing, product reviews and social media integrations – and search engine optimization features.

In order for you and your online store to be found on Google, you will need to follow certain SEO criteria set by Google. Shopify takes over some of that work for you. It also has a powerful dashboard analysis and feature that allows you to better monitor different marketing channels.

Shopify also offers a blog feature so you can easily post your blog about your product and market. Because of this, WordPress has beaten Shopify in many ways (read our beginner’s WordPress guide). If your internet business relies heavily on content marketing, you might want to use a WordPress blog with a WooCommerce plugin.

Shopify is often used for the so-called merchandise delivery business model, which means starting an online store without ever having to inventory or store inventory. The products you offer in your store are not delivered to the customer by you, but by the manufacturer or supplier.

As a cargo supplier, all you have to do is make sure your store runs smoothly and sales are coming. The reason is that you lose control over customer satisfaction because you cannot directly influence or control the supplier.

Shopify is one of the easiest ways to start a shipping company. Integration partners, such as Oberl, have automated interfaces through which your online store orders directly from your vendor. This method outperforms your competitors without any hassle, as you have to pay little or no fee to your delivery provider while Amazon or eBay charge.

As we discuss fees, Shopify’s pricing should be handled with caution. In addition to basic fees ($ 29, $ 79, or $ 299 per month), you will also be charged for each transaction that goes through your online store. Initially, the fee is 2 percent, but it drops to 1 percent as the volume of transactions increases.

This should take into account the increasing cost. As sales increase, so does the amount you have to pay to Shopify.

How to Use Shopify

In this section, we will showcase some of Shopify’s features and best practices for using it, so you can start a solid online business today.

Getting Started with Shopify

You must first create a Shopify account. Start with a 14 day free trial. Go to Shopify.com and enter the middle of the email address in the box, then click “get started.”


Enter your password and store name before clicking “create store.”


Once done, wait for Shopify to set up your store. The next step is to enter some personal information to continue.


When you’re done, click on “enter my store.” The next thing you see is the control panel of your online business. On the left you can find a navigation bar that lets you jump between different functions.


On the right, you’ll see a small dashboard that shows the key figures for your store: “total sales,” “total sales per channel,” and “top products.”


In the middle of the screen, you should see the three most important steps to launch your online store: “add product”, “customize theme” and “add domain”.


How to add a product

There are two ways to create a product in Shopify. Click “add product” in the middle of the welcome page or, if you mistakenly close the window, click “products” in the left-hand navigation bar. Then you should see the following screen.


Click on “add product.” If you do not want to add each product manually, you can upload the product catalog as a .csv file. To avoid system errors, blank fields, or other problems, Shopify specifies the structure of the file to import.

After clicking “import”, the following pop-up window will appear.


There you can download a sample .csv file by clicking on the blue text “CSV template sample”, which has the structure Shopify wants. In this guide, however, we will create products manually. Simply click “add product” and you’re ready to go.


Enter the product name in the “title” field and the product description in the “description” field.

Product image, name, and description are crucial information for a visitor to click on your product and eventually buy it. They are the key drivers of your conversion rate, so your business success increases or decreases.

Then select the sales channels you want to use to offer your product on the right. Complete the product type, supplier, and collection to which the product belongs.

While at it, always categorize your products into collections. It will be easier for your customers to find the product they are looking for. Shopify distinguishes between automated and manual collections. In this tutorial, we will work with a pre-created “homepage” collection.

Your product should now look like this.


Then a good product image and meaningful labels should be added. Shopify has an auto-zoom feature on every product image you upload. Each image will be displayed at its normal size, but when you hover over it, it will show where the mouse is. Amazon does the same. This means that adding high-resolution images is crucial.


And now, let’s talk about price options. In the “pricing” section, you’ll see three important fields: “price,” “compare by price,” and “charge taxes on this product.”

“Compare by price” is crucial if you want to show customers that a product is on sale. The price shown here is original before the discount, and the price people can buy is in the “price” field. If you do not want to bid on the item, leave the “compare by price” blank field.

The most important aspects of online sales are inventory and storage. In this context, we will discuss SKU or the stock maintenance unit.

SKU is the internal identifier that you should set for each product and each version. You can quickly get up to 200 product types, making it difficult to track without the right way to identify them. The result is absolute chaos for you and the customer.

SKU has nothing to do with barcodes. It’s just to help you find products faster and keep track of your product portfolio. We recommend that you add a standardized SKU to each product from the beginning.

A possible standard could be: five letters of the manufacturer’s name, three letters of the product series, two letters for the product model, and three letters for the product name. In the example of our camera we could do something like the CANON-EOS-T6-KIT.


When customers buy products from your online store, they still have to deliver them to their homes.

If you sell abroad, you have to deal with international customs. Each product must have an International Customs Code to determine in advance the cost of import / export.

As a salesperson, you should know how much customs duties are added to each of your products so that customers would not have the unpleasant surprise of going to the checkout counter. Shopify helps you with the link to the HS-Custom Finder tool, where you’ll find the right code.

Since product weight is also a factor in shipping costs added during the checkout process, it is best to get them from the manufacturer.

If you sell digital products, such as eBooks, audiobooks, or music, none of that is necessary. Just uncheck “this is a physical product”. As our Canon camera is not a digital product, we also have to state the weight and the International Customs Code. In our case it looks like this.


For now, leave the variants open

Lastly, we’ll show you how to customize your product SEO, which is important if you want to sell a product. To change it, click on the “edit SEO website” link and fill in the title and meta description. You can customize the URL.


Now click save and wait for Shopify to create your product. It should then appear in your product review.


Congratulations, you just added your first product to an online store.

Customize your theme

Now that you know how to add products to your online store, let’s take a look at what your store actually looks like. Go to the “sales channel” section of the left navigation bar and click the eye icon next to “online store.”


You should see the next page.


As you can see, the product we created appears in the preview but, if you scroll up and down, you will notice that the store design is boring and unattractive.

We’ll show you how you can change that. First, return to the homepage by clicking “home” or the Shopify logo at the top of the navigation bar, then clicking “customize theme”.


Like any other Shopify store, your store is created with a “debut” theme. You now have two choices: click “adjust” and change the existing “debut” theme or upload a new design that will overwrite the existing one.


The theme customization usually comes after the layout is selected. It is a refinement of existing looks and should not be used for major style adjustments. If you don’t like the look of the theme, choose another one before trying to customize it.

In this tutorial, we will replace the topic. You can choose between free and paid templates, but for now, we’ll get rid of the free one. Click on “explore free themes” to view free Shopify themes.


Browse through the topics and click the one you like best. Each topic also has several choices. We chose a “borderless” theme, with “bright” layout settings.


After adding a new theme, it should appear in the theme preview, just below the “debut” topic.


It is added to your store but not yet activated. Click “actions” below the new layout, then press “publish”.


You should see the following pop-ups. Click “publish” again to confirm.


Return to the preview function and see the new design of your store.


Although there are still a lot of gray placeholders – wildcards that you have to replace with customization – the layout looks much better.

How to Add a Domain to Your Online Store |

Let’s move on to the last part of our guide, the publication and domain management of your online store. Once you’ve fixed the look of your store and added products, it’s time to make your store accessible to the world.

Finally, return to the home screen by clicking “home”.


Then click “add domain” to open the domain administration.


There are three ways to change the domain of your store: “link existing domain”, “transfer domain” and “buy new domain”. In the interest of consistent branding, the domain should be descriptive. Shopify domains by default end with “.myshopify.com”. You can purchase a personal domain through Shopify by clicking “buy new domain”.

If you already have a domain, which would be great, go to “link existing domain” and enter the field shown in the corresponding domain.


You probably know the difference between linking and transferring a domain because you bought them in the past. If you don’t want to, check out the domain name registration article.

Which solution is better depends on you. In part, we leave domains with the service providers so that we do not lose them. If you have a domain on Shopify, it might be another one in Siteground or Bluehost, or any of our top web hosting providers, you can quickly lose track.

Adding a domain is optional with Shopify. You can also publish your default domain store (.myshopify.com), which we will do in this guide. If you sign out of Shopify now and enter your URL in your browser, you should see the following.


Each time you enter preview mode, you will see a bar at the bottom left of the screen that shows the Internet password for your store.


Alternatively, you can find your password under “sales channels”> “online store”> “settings”.


You can deactivate the password or assign a new one in the “password protection” section.


However, you will notice that you can only turn off the password after purchasing a paid plan.

Final thoughts

Shopify is a versatile tool with enough features to meet all needs. However, we do not recommend it as a silver bullet for every job. In fact, its value depends on the size of your business, your business strategy, and many other factors.

If your online business relies on content marketing, Shopify is not the best decision for you. Plus, cost is a big issue, especially with larger sales. You should consider that Shopify pays for itself less and less, the higher the sales.

If you have basic requirements and want to start an online store quickly, use Shopify. For all the complexity, you may need to hire a Shopify developer. For example, if you are a stable, branded company, you may need to make serious changes to your store, which can be expensive. The other deal breaker is fluid and associated costs.
