E-commerce packaging is as big as ever.

But conceptualizing the packaging of your product is definitely upsetting, especially if you lack design experience or just don’t know where to start.

Packaging has become just as important as the product and requires thorough research and planning to make sure it complements your merchandise and brand.

If you are in the early stages of creating your first ecommerce brand for your online products and want to get the most out of your process and budget, read on!

This guide will help guide you through the process of obtaining your ecommerce packaging manufactured in the most efficient way.

Illustrates the process of brainstorming your next custom e-commerce package.

Step 1: Budget, product placement and sizing

Initially, you will need to know how your overall packaging target will align with the scope of your budget. You want to go deep into the packaging process, realizing that you still have enough resources. This is important!

Your budget will shape the type and direction of your packaging.

When you get rid of it, start thinking about how to put the product in its packaging, as it determines the dimensions of your box.

For example, if you find yourself in a cosmetics or cosmetics company, it is ideal to place all the goods where their entire size, shape and color can be seen, while certain products on the subscribers can be stacked on top of each other.

It will all depend on you, but it is also important consider how big or small your packaging will be, as it will also affect the price.

Based on where you want to place the product and the space it can occupy, you can now determine the measurement of your packaging.

As small as possible, make the dimensions smaller and make the packaging light and small to save on materials and shipping costs.

Step 2: Choose the best packaging option

Now that the dimensions are complete, you can start looking for the best structure for your product.

There are many options to choose from, so you should decide based on your needs and requirements.

Some of the most popular and cost effective packaging options can be found below:

Lock boxes at the end of the roll

The end of the tongue or mailbox lock box is a corrugated box that is well sealed and sturdy. This is the most popular e-commerce packaging box for its security features and unpacking experience.

Slotted corrugated box

Slotted corrugated boxes are your typical shipping boxes. The sheet is formed at a joint where one plate and one end plate can be joined together. Style, however, requires manual recording. It is ideal for very large products.

Roll End Tuck top boxes

The upper end winding boxes are unlabeled boxes that can be easily assembled during assembly. The upper part can be opened and closed smoothly and provides maximum closure with the extension, which is based on the inside of the box.

These boxes are ideal for shelves, tea packaging, catalogs, clothing, gifts, electronics, health, beauty products and small hardware.

Poly Mailer

Poly-mailer is an elastic type of packaging, made of LDPE polyethylene. It is a popular choice for e-commerce companies that deliver fragile items such as clothing and soft goods because of their low shipping costs.

This type of packaging is extremely cheap, lightweight and space-saving. It is also tear resistant and waterproof. Poly-mailers have a self-adhesive adhesive tape for easy closure.

Thickness of e-commerce packaging material.

Step 3: Material thickness

Usually, the manufacturer will automatically decide the thickness of the paper based on the weight of your products and the size of your box. It is still good to have an understanding of what they are.

For corrugated packaging, flutes are used as the basis for material thickness. The following are the average thicknesses of material based on the flute:

On the flute

The average thickness of the bottle E is 1.2 mm.

LXWXH = <570 Anything smaller than this total dimension is E-flute (software, retail, beauty, food, etc.)

The average thickness of the B-flute is 3.0 mm.

LXWXH => 570 is nothing more than this total dimension B-flute (packaging, industrial products, furniture, etc.)

Digital versus offset printing in custom e-commerce packaging.

Step 4: Choose the right print type

Print quality affects the presentation and overall appearance of the product packaging.

Here are two main options for printing packaging:

Digital printing

Digital printing is the process of transferring a document on your desktop or any digital storage device to a specific print medium through a device that accepts graphical display and text.

It is perfect for low volume orders and is less expensive than other printing methods. Works best on e-commerce packaging boxes.

Just a reminder, try to keep your artwork as small as possible in terms of details and colors. Simplicity will ensure better print quality when digitally printing.

Too little detail and a lot of digital color will blur the overall quality of the artwork.

You can either search for a digital device uncoated or glossy lacquer (minimal to half-gloss effect)

Offset printing

Offset printing is a printing technique that transfers ink from a plate to a rubber roller (or blanket) and then to paper.

It is common to print large quantities of newspapers, brochures, accessories and magazines, boxes and boxes of the best print quality.

The cost of offset printing is best for high volume orders (> 1000) as it offsets the cost of setting up and changing.

What makes the offset the preferred choice for printing is its ability to print in PMS Color and the fabrication of special printing processes such as matte and glossy coatings for laminating, UV point, foil stamping and embossing, which digital cannot.

Step 5: Type of supplies of materials

Choosing the right material supplies depends on your artwork and your brand. Check out the different options below:

Natural White (Digital & Offset): For colorful and floppy printing

Bleached white (digital): brighter color printing to mimic offset printing

Kraft (Digital & Offset): Eco-friendly and rustic-looking – perfect with black print and no coating is required.

Step 6: Add custom inserts

You may also consider adding inserts for protection or for promotional purposes.

To help you decide, we’ve listed some types of inserts for different purposes.

Protective inserts

If you want to protect and organize your product, you can use cardboard or foam inserts to split the product.

These types of packaging inserts will prevent your products from moving around the box during transit. They also enhance the customer experience when they receive the boxes.

Protective inserts are usually a little more expensive to add, but if you have extra capital, you can opt for this option.

Thanks & Promotional Contributions

Thanks to inserts are one of the cheapest ways to promote your product and increase brand awareness, customer loyalty and sales.

A personalized message will not only make your customers feel that you value them, but will also allow them to treat their “customer journey” as a personal encounter.

Promotional inserts also give them motivation to continue engaging with your products and the opportunity for them to receive the highest value for your products and / or service.

Step 7: Design the artwork

Here are simple elements that you can incorporate into your artwork to resonate with your customers. The printed design is actually the first thing they see and communicate.

You poor need fancy letters or designs to get the attention of your customers. All you need is a well thought out brand message that reflects the personality and value of your brand.

On the inside and outside of the box there are signs like “This is my good side” and “Bravo. You obviously have great taste. “Bad is nothing special, but DSC packaging has come a long way in promoting their unique brand and voice through brand messaging.

Unlimited brand color scheme

What’s great about custom ecommerce print boxes is that you can use unlimited colors for your artwork at no extra cost.

Among other things, be sure to include all the color elements of your brand in the artwork. If your website, blog content, and product use pastel colors, then it might make sense to include that in your packaging.

You can also consider the psychology of colors and choose which colors you want to trigger based on your customer’s emotions.

Brand logo

This should be visible the moment they receive your box (whether inside or outside the box). Make sure your name is recognizable as well.

Step 8: Design Skip the prototyping process (especially for large orders)

You’ve come close to creating the perfect packaging! This step is one of the most important parts of the process as it is a way to ensure the quality of your packaging.

Prototyping is recommended (to confirm the structure and printing of the final packaging result).

Imagine receiving 10,000 boxes with the wrong dimension. It will be a catastrophic situation!

The best option is to request a physical CTP proof (for checking the printout) and a non-printed sample (for checking the structure).

Another great option is a custom pattern. This allows you to see how your artwork will fit into the structure (made on a digital digital pattern).

The biggest drawback to custom samples is that they are usually printed in digital form. If you produce an offset for final production, the pattern and final production may not 100% match in color.

In this case, receiving a physical CTP Proof would be better for offset printing because it shows you exactly what will be printed on the box.

Step 9: Production and Shipping

You will have minimal involvement in the last step of this guide. This is the case when the mass of the manufacturer produces the packaging based on all the final specifications.

It is usually the manufacturer who will take care of this part of the process, but you also have the option of taking responsibility for the shipment.

There are three ways you can deliver your products:

  • Sea freight (Comes from abroad and is usually the cheapest option for international shipping)
  • Air freight (Overseas or local, fastest and most expensive)
  • Train or truck (Local)

Logistics can be a daunting process, especially if you are shipping international companies, thankfully companies like PakFactory do all the shipping work!

Et Voila!

Instead, let the process overwhelm you, instead, you see this as an opportunity to connect with your target market.

This will allow you to design packaging that will help you sell your product and attract customers!

It can be daunting to launch your own ecommerce packaging, but with the right preparation, any business can get a personal touch.
