It’s a lot of time spent on business, not on business.
Does that sound familiar? You are an CEO, CEO, entrepreneur or business manager, you work hard and you feel like your resources and time have grown. You do work for two to three people and teach for 60 hours or more. You lose employees and don’t know why. You are frustrated, beaten up and angry.
Teams don’t talk to each other and make costly unnecessary mistakes because important information isn’t shared between them. There is no responsibility. It is becoming increasingly difficult to attract and retain the right customers and employees as well as the company culture begins to slip. You feel like your people don’t care about their work and don’t put on 100% because you repeat over and over but don’t see change.
You’ve gone so far as weeds that you don’t see the big picture. You lose confidence in making decisions. The feeling of your indecision lures you crazy. You may even question yourself, your strengths and what the company needs to move forward. You resent your business – and don’t give you the freedom you wanted or expected.

Dr. Karen graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree psychology He then moved to the University of Connecticut to earn a master’s degree and a PhD. in clinical psychology. From there she went to Armyas an army officer and psychologist.
While serving in the military, he was interested in what he called the “business application of psychology.” In the army he worked with both individual soldiers and unit commanders. Dr Karen says: “You need a map to understand the area where you work (this applies to military leadership). Military and executive leaders move over a large area. To better understand the landscape, leaders of all kinds need a map of the territory.”
In today’s world we are often guided by GPS. To get where you need to go, you need to put the coordinates. What Dr. Karen learned from her clients is that they need to know what else is possible on the map. Once they get a broader view, they may want to move on to a place they previously knew. Thus was born her 5-stage process. The result is executives who come out with clarity, confidence and courage. They move forward with a plan on how to get to the right destination.
Atlas of the five-step reinvention for business
Step one: a clarity map – Clarity lies in understanding the big picture. Often, when a company is in crisis, people get lost in the “weeds” and see the big picture. Dr. Karen shows executives how to step back enough to understand what they want to do and why.
Step two: map opportunities – At this stage, leaders are considering different perspectives and options. Dr. “Customers often narrow their attention prematurely and don’t see the full range of opportunities available,” Karen says. For optimal results, they need to decide what to do and how not to do it. Looking at opportunities, people are forced to talk together rather than work in bunkers. When problems arise, it is usually because people are too long in their bunkers and do not talk to each other. They do not yet see the collective possibility or benefit of co-creation.
Step three: map priorities – Managers need to figure out what to do first, then the second and so on. In considering the priorities of Dr. “Think of the biggest levers of change,” Karen says. Choose a priority that knocks down a bunch of dominoes and steers the organization in the direction they want to go. In struggling businesses, executives are usually entangled in day-to-day operations and lack clarity in priorities.
Step four: culture map – To select the changes that lead to significant results, struggling businesses must create a culture that supports these changes. Sometimes people don’t see how their culture is holding back. Dr. Karen spends a lot of time and energy studying and enhancing the overall corporate culture and specialized cultures within the organization.
Step five: the mind map – Dr. Karen says, “Whatever you are, you can create.” Even though this is the fifth step, Dr. Karen has been working smart since day one with clients. Senior executives often do not see or understand their own contribution to their internal problems. When they complain about the behavior of their people, the complaint reinforces the behavior. It is much more effective for senior executives to reinforce whatever they want and also to model what they want because the organization can see the behavior in action.
Dr. Karen uses her five-step process to show clients how to select and retain the best people, build high-performance teams, and develop cultures that quickly reap innovative results.
When employees and team members are in crisis, they want someone who is willing to walk with them through difficulties to not just come and throw a card and say, “Okay, good luck, see you.” Dr. Karen’s clients admit that she cares about them.
