Although the dropship sounds simple because of the content available all over the internet in its favor, it is not quite as simple as many tell you. There are many technical hurdles to being a drop shipping company and if you don’t get them right first, the chances of succeeding along the way are slim.

It may sound like I am discouraging you from embarking on this journey, but, frankly, I am just assessing what lies ahead, i.e. what obstacles you need to face and how to prepare for them. The first obstacle is choosing the best ecommerce platform for your shipping company.

Both e-commerce and dropshippers use the same types of e-commerce platform, as businesses are synonymous. But there are small differences that Dropshippers need to know before they start their business, such as the ease of access, pricing, and most importantly the support these stores offer.

Criteria for choosing the best e-commerce platform for delivering goods

There would be no justice if I did not set the criteria for comparing these top e-commerce platforms. That’s why, here’s a set of simple rules for comparing platforms to each other.

  • The platform should be easy to use and almost free
  • All plug-inps plugins should be supported
  • It should have effective and 24/7 support
  • This should make management flawless and help grow your business

Which platforms are the most popular dropshipping websites?

The value of any e-commerce platform can only be gauged by knowing how many prominent stores it uses for its storefront. Here is a list of the best e-commerce platforms and websites working on a drop shipyard.

Web page URL Ecommerce platform
Ripley WooCommerce
Eukanuba Store
A couture wool company
Helly Hensen Magento
Miss guided
Marucci Sports BigCommerce
Nine-line clothing
For the cheering fans OpenCart
Shirts for $ 6
Negative laundry Shopify

It’s hard to decide, isn’t it?

All of these e-commerce platforms are powerful and host thousands of the best e-commerce businesses.

E-commerce Platform Market Share

It’s pretty difficult to decide which e-commerce platform is best for dropshipping, which is why I added the market share of the best e-commerce platforms.

The chart shows that WooCommerce is the most used e-commerce platform in the world, followed by Magento and Shopify. BigCommerce, on the other hand, has a small market share and OpenCart is not even listed.

Self Service Platform vs Hosted

Another debate that often comes up when discussing e-commerce platforms is whether to buy a self-service or hosted e-commerce platform for purchase. The answer is pretty simple: if you can afford it and aren’t as technical, come with a hosted ecommerce platform. And, if you are technically, then go with your own e-commerce platform hosted as this gives you more freedom.

I have put together a list to help explain the differences between the two in a clearer way.

The host himself Hosted
An e-commerce hosting platform on a hosting server of your choice The platform comes with a host server
Complete freedom to customize stores Limited freedom to customize stores
You must manually add plugins and themes Themes and add-ons (sometimes) come pre-installed
Free for personal and commercial use Paid multi-pack platform
It has a massive support community It rarely has a support community, but customer support is available
Ensure complete control of the platform Help set up shop quickly, but do not allow complete control

List of the best Dropshipping platforms

Let’s get into the details to search the best ecommerce platform for startups looking to start a Dropshipping business. The comparison below focuses on the ease of use, customer support and cost of each platform.

1. WooCommerce

WooCommerce is the most used e-commerce platform worldwide. It has a market share of more than 28% in total ecommerce stores, and the main credit for this lies in the free and easy installation of the add-on. WooCommerce users can install it with just one click, making it an ideal platform for even non-technical users.

  • User approach: WooCommerce comes with a simple GUI interface that any newcomer can understand. It is built on WordPress, a favorite platform among bloggers, which allows users to add more plugins for free. Users can easily install WooCommerce on WordPress and start their business with just a few clicks.
  • Support: WooCommerce has a wide community of designers and developers who are actively working to promote this platform. Users can easily find tons of material about the installation and support of this platform on the internet.
  • Price: WooCommerce is completely free to use. It’s a WordPress plugin and users who have WordPress installed can easily install it as a plugin at no cost.
  • Websites that appear on it: Because it has millions of online stores, you can easily find many well-known e-commerce sites by using it as an e-commerce platform. Some of them are Singer, Weber Grills, Ripley believe it or not and All Black.

2. Magento

Magento is the second most used e-commerce platform in the world. It’s strong but complex and may not be suitable for beginners. Magento is a developer-friendly e-commerce platform that requires at least basic programming knowledge. Most dropshippers who use Magento as an e-commerce platform either know about developing Magento stores or have hired developers for this purpose.

  • User approach: Magento is an advanced e-commerce platform with a simple design. Anyone looking to get their paper delivery business started can use it to create an ecommerce store, but they will need help solving errors or updating Magento. Therefore, I will not recommend it to complete beginners.
  • Support: Magento is a widely used platform. It has an official forum where Magento officials, developers and designers are available to assist newcomers. There are also more off-site channels like Youtube channels, blogs and forums where users can get help if they run into obstacles while developing their Dropshipping stores. Magento also offers more dropshippers accessories.
  • Price: Magento is a completely free ecommerce platform and anyone can launch it with a little help.
  • Websites that appear on it: Magento hosts thousands of top ecommerce sites. Sellers and manufacturers like Selco BW, Dufry and JCB use it to run their business.

Bonus tip: Always choose optimized ecommerce hosting to ensure your stores are loading lightning fast.

3. Shopify

One of the most powerful e-commerce platforms for Dropshipping is undoubtedly Shopify. It is claimed to host about 500,000 stores and e-commerce and dropshipping websites. In 2016, Shopify officially purchased Oberlo, a drug add-on that makes importing and ordering a product a painless process. It is one of the most used e-commerce platforms by users who are not technically secure.

  • User approach: Shopify is very understanding. Users can sign in to the platform and start adding products to it. The platform also offers pre-populated pages like About Us, Privacy Policy, Return Policy, Shipping Information and Shipping Calculator for easy store setup.
  • Support: Shopify offers 24/7 support for email, phone and chat. It also has its own official forum where users can ask for help. But as Shopify is proprietary, you won’t find much help in community forums related to custom development.
  • Price: Shopify is a paid ecommerce platform. It has three plans ranging from $ 29 to $ 299. Businesses interested in getting premium services can opt for Advanced Shopify.
  • Websites that appear on it: Shopify hosts most of the best Dropshipping stores. It features websites like Negative Lingerie, UgMonk, Flat Spot and Pipcorn.

4. BigCommerce

BigCommerce is a hosted ecommerce platform. It has a significant share of the e-commerce platform market and claims to host more than 50,000 small business websites and 2,000+ businesses. It is known for its simple user interface and quick e-commerce setup process. As a hosted ecommerce platform, compared to Shopify, BigCommerce is more affordable because it charges no transaction fees and offers unlimited staff accounts, in addition to other prominent features.

  • User approach: BigCommerce is easy to use. You can set up a test account and get started easily. Most BigCommerce themes are free and you can easily customize the look to your needs.
  • Support: BigCommerce offers the same support as Shopify, including email, chat, phone and forum.
  • Price: BigCommerce offers three basic packages ranging from $ 29 to $ 250. It also offers a business version, price is undetectable and you will need to call the BigCommerce team to get one.
  • Websites that appear on it: BigCommerce hosts e-commerce stores of multiple top companies, including Toyota, Marucci Sports and Nine Line Apparel.

5. OpenCart

OpenCart is a free, easy-to-set e-commerce platform. Anyone who is a bit of a techie can easily set up their OpenCart store. The platform offers more free and paid plugins and themes for dropshipping.

  • User approach: As OpenCart is made for e-commerce, it offers analytics, payments and order quantity in the admin dashboard. The point-and-click interface makes it a welcome platform for non-technical users as well.
  • Support: OpenCart offers ticket and email support to its users. It also hosts a forum where Opencart users can get answers to problems they face while setting up stores.
  • Price: OpenCart is completely free to use. You will only have to pay for hosting.
  • Websites that appear on it: Many reputable e-commerce stores use OpenCart as their e-commerce platform. They include the British Red Cross, for cheerleaders and $ 6 shirts.

Top of the list of the best dropshipping platforms

I rated each platform based on its features. As you can see, WooCommerce and Magento scored the most points. This is because these two have achieved the highest prices and usability. Similarly, I scored Shopify and BigCommerce lower in the rankings because they are very expensive to pay.

My recommendations

All the e-commerce platforms mentioned in this article are great for dropshipping, but I advocate only free e-commerce platforms. So I’m going to start with WooCommerce for the following reasons.

First, it’s easy to customize one of the most commonly used e-commerce platforms. Second, it provides simple customizations and is fairly easy to run with almost no experience. Third, it comes with automatic top-up add-ons like AliDropship and Dropified to make it easier to manage your store. For these reasons, it would not be wrong to call WooCommerce the best ecommerce platform for small businesses and dropshippers.
